Increasing member diversity. A Making of More Inclusive and Representative Community

Fantastic start . Shall we start taking action on these?

Turns out there are lots of policy docs, research papers etc on inclusivity and diversity in makerspaces (duh!).

One inclusivity issue I read about was making absolute beginners (and people who think they are) feel welcome and not intimidated by people further along the journey.

So, in addition to my 4 items above, I propose item 0, which is mapping out definitions of inclusivity and diversity, and then itemising all the categories/types/nuances/audiences etc. Feels like a wiki or a workshop is needed?

Yeah that could be a plan. Would you be willing to facilitate a workshop, with some help?

Interesting . Resentment from who and about what? Hopefully not resentment about increasing diversity?

In terms of ā€œresentmentā€ I have seen poorly handled interventions that raise an issue but fail to address it. This has the result of raising expectations and failing to meet them, leading to deeper feelings of exclusion than if the matter hadn’t been raised all!

That’s a fair point. I feel that happened last time we discussed issues surrounding this after the BLM protests

I’m happy to help plan, and participate. I think we may need to explore what structure to use for facilitation (perhaps even outsourced?).

Perhaps we should start with an informal working group to start the process, and then they can hand over as appropriate?
