I’ve recently gotten into amateur radio (I’m taking my Foundation exam on Saturday!) and I wonder if there are any other hams in the makerspace I could chat to?
i don’t get involved in it unfortunately but i do have a foundation license and knowledge in terms of homebrew circuitry. i’ve not really been all that interested in actually going on the air. there’s something tedious about announcing the callsign all the time etc, takes the fun out of it for me, cb was way better back in the day when i was a kid. would be cool with discussing the electronic side of things sometimes though and do support the idea of getting the space more involved in such things.
@adamjpage is also a ham… so gonna tag. sorry not sorry.
Professional communications engineer not overly interested in amateur but will happily answer questions.
Another point to note is I am still storing all the RF test equipment that’s the electrotecs decided was unnecessary for electronics.
If you can persuade them that RF is a valid form of electronics I can bring them before I dispose of them the spectrum analyser has already gone but they still a generator and a modulation metre .
I have an intermediate license but I’ve not done much with it. If people want to set up a rig in the space, I might be able to contribute some equipment but I’m not sure we have a great location for antennas etc
Cool! All: I’d be keen to meet up and chat, I’m planning to be at the space sunday midday [edit: specifically BEFORE 1pm], I’d be very grateful for some getting-started advice over a cuppa?
@joeatkin2 do you have a manifest of the equipment? I might be able to take some off your hands!
Currently I have a couple of Baofeng UV-5R, which I actually had kicking around from a different project, I was delighted that it’s a recommended starter radio!
I’m interested in playing around with low-bandwidth packet radio, starting off, presumably with PSK31 - anyone got into computer-y stuff like that? @electronoob, you might find that takes away some of the tedium of shouting out the callsign every time you change frequency!
Tris I’ve been wanting to try amateur radio for years! Since I learnt morse code as procrastination from my final physics exams back in 2012. Would you show me your setup some time?
Will
I’ve also recently discovered Topographical Map and love it. Would like to get 3 people positioned on Crystal Palace Hill, Hampstead Heath and Shooters Hill and use long range signalling to communicate across London.
Nice. I’m trying to visit the space at least once a week at the moment to build up my making experience and make some headway on a long list of projects. Let me know if you’re ever around and able to bring your setup.
