Wish I could make it! Can someone post some photos as it happens so we can see and document some of the ideas explored? Many thanks!!
I’ll do an update later…good turnout and great energy yesterday…first experience of the physical space (or just about enough of it)…plenty of ideas were kicked around…and some fun was had
I captured some photos and impressions of what I heard, but it would be great if people who attended wanted to add some notes to this thread (no matter how random!) before it’s forgotten
We can now easily run versions of this process, perhaps an evening this week (though it would be good to have more idea of latest thoughts from woodwork and metalwork to feed into it)
after discussions with @joeatkin2 @Ryanf @smjmaker here are the revisions to the current space . with another option to use the space for other events such as herne hill film festival, (room can be easily transformed by moving benches)arch 2 mk3.pdf (26.3 KB) arch 2 space.pdf (26.3 KB)
Comments welcome
Assuming there will be some divide between the entrance door and lathe? Just dont want anyone coming in, dropping something on a spinning lathe and vice versa.
Yes a wall placed behind the lathe
There’s so much space! Multiple workbenches with access from all sides! : )
My 2 cents worth -
Sheet storage
Could it beside the CNC room? Easier to slide them out and into the CNC room, as opposed to manoeuvring from behind - especially if working on your own.
Planar/Thicknesser
Can we find a position which allows longer pieces of timber to be run through without obstructions, possibly with a workbench doubling up as a feed in or out table.
It can be hovercrafted into position. My thinking is to use that feature to move it out of the way when needed, rather than to move in when needed - it’s a frequently used tool - whereas we’ll only need a full open floor handful of times a year eg Herne Hill Fill festival.
If the sheet storage is next to the CNC we can also make use of the full ceiling height and build storage above it?
Could the sheet storage/shop be bigger ?- the CNC will likely be quite popular and the various with many ply board thicknesses and veneer combinations - bigger the shop is the less frequently it’ll need restocking, reduce woodtech’s workload.
Will we retain or relocate the metal shelves above the existing woodshop door? They are great for freeing up floor space.
We have a lot of headroom in Arch 2, could we look at ways of making use of it?
Having a sheet materials shop is quite a big commitment that could require quite a lot of floor space…my understanding is that the ‘sheet goodstore’ would be for storing sheets for a particular CNC project: say you had 5 sheets: get them delivered, put one on CNC table, and store the others in the store…but that’s not to say it’s not possible, or not a good idea
ahead of tomorrow meetup, I would like to add a slight alternative version to the wood shop.
Arch 2.pdf (77.6 KB)
The 2 main differences are moving the cnc down towards the dividing wall and turning it by 180°, and moving the sheet storage next to the entrance.
Issues with the current layout:
- having the CNC in the middle of the room makes the layout of the woodshop an arward shape
- not all areas of the woodshop are visible from other points so there are a lot of blind spots in the space
- having wood storage right next to the large window front seems counter productive. Why wouldn’t we use the area with the must natural light for working or something else
- does the expose of light, temperature and humidity differences affect wood?
- people should be looking at something different rather than a pile of wood when they look through the window
- currently the way to get sheets to the cnc from the door or storage is not really ideal
Moving the CNC and sheet storage could improve this by:
- more open plan space
- possibility of straight path from metal shop door to entrance door
- far better visibility throughout the space
- more natural light will be let in
- Sheet storage as division wall for lathe and entrance would make moving sheets around easier and paths shorter
- acts as privacy screen for lathe worker to concentrate better
I think there was talk about curtains for the windows for privacy if needed already so moving more of the work area there wouldn’t be a problem
Interesting idea which solves one problem!
Where are all the other tools going in this plan you have devised ?
The original plan was devised, knowing from experience what space is needed for each tool. Along with which particular tool has the most use.
Please feel free to put forward a complete thought out idea.
I cannot see the point of discussing half a plan
I did leave the rest clear on purpose as I am not an expert at the arrangement of woodwork machines as you rightly have pointed out.
Nevertheless, the idea of moving the CNC is about general efficiency of space usage and other things as pointed out in the post above and should be worth discussing.
If the CNC rotated 90 degrees and went into the corner by the it could share its feed space to the length of the arch.
As I said I think it’s really important to share feeds spaces
As I said above please supply a full plan that works rather than just a solution with one tool. I don’t give a damn where everything goes as long as it works and we get the move done soon!
I have supplied a plan that works in my head! It was discussed with woodtechs a couple of weeks ago and changes were made.
Joe you have the experience in the workshop so you are likely to come up with a workable plan but do it soon so everyone can talk about it!
I don’t want this to turn into bikegate 2
My original plan was posted 7 months ago and has had two major revisions since then based on feedback and discussions with woodtechs.
Power and lighting I presume will be done in weeks rather than months…, so we need a decision to be made
Need a sink 1m from the electrics for sharpening station
Eh? There is no sink in arch 2 mk3?
And need extracts for the lathe(sanding) and do we roll the spindle moulders all the way over to the other side to use them!?
There is no sink in the plan but it has been discussed with woodtechs it was going into the original bench. Next to the toilet
So you have sharpening station next to the toilet (by electrics, and then the sink (legal distance away from the electrics. (This is the only obvious place to put it as water supply and drainage are close by.)
Wait, so you want a plan including everything, and you haven’t provided one for what you have already discussed with just a couple of people?
I have yet to see a plan including another sink, or a sharpening station, and even electrics at all…
Or am I missing something… the last diagram is arch2 mk3 - correct?
