Can someone give me a hand modelling 2 sets of lathe chuck jaws? I found a couple models on thingverse so that might can be modified and sized. I need to make a set of outside jaws and step ones. Or it would be simpler to cut them drill a couple holes and cut some threads?
Are you making softjaws? Do you have fusion360?
Do you have a picture/sketch of what you have in mind? or the chuck?
Best,
Joe
Kind of. I got a lathe chuck, but it only has the inside jaws. So I want to make the outside ones, and a 3 jaw version of the one on the machine.
I haven’t set fusion up yet, but we have it on the 3d printers pc in the space.
I see…you need to measure each jaws with a digital caliper and spend a couple of hours in the CAD afterwards. Making them is another issue but I’m sure you know that.
For what I can see the chuck in the second picture is a 4 jaw chuck with aluminium soft jaws and if I’m right it is easy to make replacement jaws for that chuck…if you can get the right size material most of the job can be done with a pillar drill and a normal lathe.
Is that an ornamental lathe?
I haven’t been to the space on ages but I’m thinking of going to the party, maybe I can get early and give you some advise.
more likly a week for me over the cad I’m so good in it as a rabbit in rocket science
I can make silicone negative of the jaws and cast the base , than turn the rest on the lathe.
The one on the photo for the chuck is a lindow rose engine.
I’m building my rose engine thats why I need to make all weird stuff.
I’m not CAD wizard but know enough to get by…I did try to make a chuck at work once but only got as far to the bodies lots of work and not enough time.
If you can modify the existing jaws of the 3 jaw chuck you can made something like the chuck on the taig lathe.
The removable soft jaws? I managed to cad the 3 tops for the step jaws so I can 3dprint them for testing, and when the disk for the machinesaw arrives I’ll do the chopping.I found a couple printable chucks on thingwerse their jaws could be modified to fit
