Chuck fallen off pillar drill in woodshop

Heads up @woodtechs, went to use the pillar drill in the woodshop today and the whole chuck fell out.

I know how to change bits, but I don’t have a clue how the chuck is secured so I just left it lying on the drill bed so the next person to come along knows it isn’t secured.

OK, thanks for reporting…

It’s a morse taper held in by friction

I will give it a clean today and put it back in

There’s the Morse taper and the chuck mounting taper. It’s more common for these to drop out where the chuck receives a force from the side such as using a sanding drum in the chuck. The tapers can become damaged through this and I’d certainly caution against large drum sanders and heavy sanding in the pillar drill.
