Drinks fridge

While repairing the backing for the kitchen, we were thinking it would be cool to move the drinks fridge from Arch2 into the space, have a few members stock it and then run some kind of honor system to keep it stocked. We cleaned it up and i think it looks great!

What does everybody think?

That’s a great idea!

Interesting idea…but we already have a fridge, so I’d ask the question of whether it adds anything and can it justify taking up space and using electricity?

Hey Dermot! I think the intention was to have a strict separation of ā€œthe stuff that people can take?ā€.

  • This fridge would be fully stocked w/ drinks only, and have some kind of POS system connected strictly to the contents of this fridge and thus be a community resource.
  • The kitchen fridge can continue to be used for fridge things… food, ketchup, and people’s personal drinks that are not open to the community. Well… maybe the ketchup…

The underlying thing this solves is that people don’t have to procure drinks after the bar has closed (for example after nighttime inductions). We can’t stock up and use the existing fridge because it would be unclear to others whether they can use this or not, and there would be no clear way to reimburse. the drinks-purchaser.

Anyway, that was the thought, but of course it was just a thought! Open to tweaks, mods, and critiques!

If you had to shove the printer behind the sofa there’s obv not space.

If a digital POS is introduced, the turnover will add up and bring us closer to paying VAT, which on the basis of we are a non-profit wouldean a quarter of money from subscription would not go towards the rent, but to the tax. Not saying tax is bad, but in this instance might make it difficult to pay rent.

I wonder how loud it is, how warm is the couch as a result of a fridge backing on it?

I am against this as the printer is unusable in that corner. It could have been brought up on members meeting

This is the first I have heard of not liking that location for the printer… I would have put it there regardless of the drinks fridge… Let’s look at other options this afternoon?

Cheers,
Andy

I appreciate the enthusiasm, its just very unusual that just a couple of people make sole decisions on introducing new stuff to slms overnight. Its more the principle that inflames me. I surely like idea of the fridge, but goddamit, how do you access the side tray or sit on the couch when people lean over you.

It’s a little different for me as the fridge was chilling in Arch 2, waiting for use. I don’t think anyone’s super vested in it one way or the other but seems like a great idea to get going!

put books into it, we can turn it into a book swap thing?

The fridge was left there by previous tenant, I have a layered opinion that does not include judging it as a bad idea, I am only critical in terms of 1) consent 2) location 3) having two fridges and our environmental pledge

I like the idea of a drinks fridge, and as we have one good idea,
However there will be more room for this in arch 2.
Not so sure about storing alcohol in there though because that can lead to licensing issues.

Bottles of water, soft drinks etc could be stocked as a trial, we could probably source a nice selection in bulk and sell at a small profit to cover the cost of the electricity to run the fridge!

It would also encourage movement between arches.

Hot drinks arch 1
Cold drinks arch 2

Good idea Mark, could be perfect for Arch 2 where there is no kitchen…

Hi Petra, I totally get the whole ā€œunilateral decisionā€ thing, and how it could come accross. I promise it wasn’t part of an evil plan to screw up the printer! The whole start of it was to repair the kitchen, and once that was done and we were putting things back, there was a ā€œfridge-sized holeā€ leftover. So, to Andy’s point, we moved the printer into the corner first and then thought about the fridge.

But absolutely, the printer needs to be restored to working order. I’ll be there later on tonight so am happy to move things over if need.

That’s for sure, in no way i suggested intentionality of any evil kind. I expressed th critique you were asking for.

LOL!

Can I point out that this kind of fridge are very inefficient as well?

Do we really want to have it on only because looks pretty and it’s free?

I don’t know the exact figures but similar models on Amazon show 14 quid of power a year. That would cost about 12p to carbon offset.

It sounds like quite a few folks are interested in the beverage part.

I like the idea. I often forget to drink whilst at the space (hyper focus). Having the fridge there and not having to trek to the shop would encourage me to drink more.

I really think the best thing to do is test the process in its simplest form

  • see if members are interested in having drinks handy (on a low-tech honesty box system) via Discourse post
  • if there’s interest try it out using the fridge we have

Report how it works and consider the value of the space the larger fridge needs for this

This could turn out to be quite complex - which drinks to stock, who’s responsible for stock control, etc etc

This fridge is likely inefficient (glass door) and a little noisy too

BTW alcoholic drinks could not be a part of an honesty box scheme as we don’t have a licence to sell and calling payments donations when they’re not donations isn’t a convincing argument

I’ve moved the fridge back into Arch2

I’m not against the suggestion, but we’re not a do-ocracy at SLMS…so apologies if anyone felt their work and enthusiasm is being undermined, but it’s really not that at all

If members want to propose a trial of a drinks shop that’d be excellent: bring it to the next meeting as an outline, members can ask for clarification, you can get feedback and suggestions, and see if there’s appetite (sorry!) for trialling this on a ā€˜good enough for now, safe enough to try’ basis

you really had to throw the pun in there, didn’t you?

Cool. Sorry for all the drama!
