Free tree

Hey all! A tree in my communal yard tried to kill us so we killed it right back. And now there are many logs waiting to be turned.

It’s a plum tree… Apparently good for turning… If anyone with a car wants to come get some, let me know! Apparently tomorrow they will disappear. I will keep a piece of two for myself, but can’t keep more than that.

I’m in London… +4407979781163. Chiamami… forse we can do lunch or somethin, and grab some good pieces?

Whereabouts are you? I have a car and would quite like to grab some logs if they can fit into my Ford Fiesta and I can just store at home?

If it is nearby I can come over either this evening or some time tomorrow? I’m planning on making a chess set when I’ve learned how to use the lathe so don’t need much but also don’t really have much space to store a lot?

I’d like to make it clear that turning a lot of green wood will rust the lathe parts and tools so more maintainance would be needed from users, but probably mainly techs. Preferably turn dry, will talk with other lathetechs about this in depth at some point.

Fair point, I wasn’t aware of this, good to know, thanks

ok I’ll give you a call tomorrow

Oh sorry petra! I didn’t know there were reprecussions to the gear. I guess people can still get stuff, but let’s dry it at home… what is it? One inch per year?

I also heard you can microwave wood in a dedicated microwave to dry it out?

Yeah, I just googled drying of wood, seems quite an involved process and needs some space and time so maybe I am biting off more than I can chew :grimacing:

I guess if using green wood on the lathe will cause us problems then I’ll stick with the advice…

Would be amazing to look into drying wood, we also have the big oven that is not doing anything rn
Edit: could experiment with some of the wood @Ben_Mahon facilitated?

And it will do funny things too when it starts to dry. but it can be kept somewhere to dry and used when it’s dry enough. My method of drying wood is to paint the cut ends and leave it to dry. For fast drying: we have a massive oven

Steve is coming by at around noon to get some stuff… should I get a few more pieces… like 5-10 to drop them off in the space too to see what happens?

@Gergo_Dala, why do you paint the bottoms? To prevent fast drying and therefore cracking?

Yes. You can use glue or wax to seal these.

Great idea. Down tomorrow to cut down those pieces, reseal, label and store properly.

Longer than 10cm for handles, size bigger than the finished product. There is a waste around the sides!

Yepp!

Also if we can get some root that would be a good project material in the winter for the smokers, thats perfect for pipes!
