International Women's Day 2022

Didn’t think we should let this get away without the chance to celebrate some female makers/tech advocates

I’ll start with two from my life:

  • Maggie Philbin - Tomorrow’s World presenter and now STEM/tech/science communicator, and a regular TV presence when I was young (whenever that was)
  • Zoe Laughlin - co-founder of the Institute of Making (an early flagship ‘makerspace’ and a big friend to and influence on SLMS…as well as a tonne of TV and generally spreading the word about how fascinating materials are

I learned about Ladi Kwali when I visited the ‘Body Vessel Clay’ exhibition last month: Ladi Kwali, OON, MBE was a Nigerian potter. Ladi Kwali was born in the village of Kwali in the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria, where pottery was an indigenous occupation among women. She learned to make pottery as a child by her aunt using the traditional method of coiling.
