Laser induction volunteer needed (14 August)

I have scheduled a laser induction (9 people) on Monday 14 August from 19:00 to 21:30.

I need 1 volunteer to assess users doing the practical steps at the laser.

Ideally you have been through one of the “Ruby” laser inductions.
However, I will provide training and a checklist for use in the session.

You’ll ideally need to be there from 6:30 to 10:00 to help with setup and shut down.

This is a great volunteering opportunity for those on the path to getting shutter access.

Thanks

I can do that - I might use that opportunity to get footage for a laser induction video also.

I think there’s footage for the processes already if we wanted to just dub over it, that might be an easy win.

The current induction consists of:

  1. A powerpoint presentation
  2. 3 videos on youtube
  3. Some example projects on the table for people to handle and view
  4. Me discussing projects, applications, online resources etc
  5. A practical test

The current process allows 9 people to get inducted in about 2 hours.

In the Flipped Classroom approach:

1 and 2 can be combined into a video that people watch before they come
3 and 4 can happen while people wait for number 5

This would cut the induction time down a lot - perhaps 1 hour for those who wait their turn the longest.

I’m OK with this approach, so long as they retain the info on how to do the maintenance steps and cutting workflow.

@dannz can I confirm that you will volunteer? I can go through Ruby with you if you haven’t used it.

Thanks
Brendon

I’m currently in the process of writing/preping a video version of the theory side of the induction. Hopefully have a draft to share in a few days

Yes, can confirm that. If there’s anyone else who’s really keen to volunteer for this e.g. to help them get shutter access, I’m happy to step aside for them. If not, take this as confirmation.

Martin inducted me recently. I used Ruby in the practical test, but I’d like to be more familiar with it, ideally using it a few times. I’ll try to get to do that in advance. If I need to, I’ll reach out to you, Martyn or lasertechs.

Re induction video, it’s best to have a dedicated shoot for that rather than filming an actual induction with inductees. Filming an actual induction however is valuable as reference which helps for the dedicated shoot later. Using suitable YouTube videos would be a big help in cutting the workload.

so long as they retain the info on how to do the maintenance steps and cutting workflow.

A written checklist (as with desktop CNC) is super-helpful. A core section of the induction video can also be used as a video tool guide which users can refer to later. (Consider structuring the induction video in that way). I know I wouldn’t retain that info unless get to use it regularly shortly after - which generally won’t happen. Checklist and a video linked to that checklist demonstrating each step (with checklist titles and chapter points) may be the best way to ensure steps and workflow are properly followed after induction.

Hi Dan

Just confirming that the induction is going ahead.
Are you still OK to volunteer for the practical test?

Thanks
Brendon

I am happy to help out if @dannz is not available.

Hi Brendon, yes. If Karin would like to take my place, I’m very happy to step aside if it e.g. helps her for getting shutter access. Otherwise expect me to be there.

no need to step aside. But thanks

Hey @Brendon_Hatcher & @Martyn_Thomas, if in need I would be happy to help for future inductions later on too

Also happy to help in future now I’m getting more comfortable with the laser

Thanks for volunteering! We’ll let you know when we need another volunteer.

I’m going to be about from 6PM to get up to speed with the new induction process (so I can start running them once again  ) - so yeah I guess I’ll be about too !
