Removing flooring

Good morning Makers,

I’ve recently moved into a new house with some form of wooden flooring, I would like to remove some of the floor to give me access to run network and phone cobles. Does anyone have any information on this floor

It doesn’t appear to be Laminate and I’ve got next to no idea how to pull it up, any advice would be appreciated

I can come and have a look at it if you want

Judging by the uneven plank lengths I suspect it’s solid wood, and judging by the lack of nails I suspect it’s glued. A very nice floor, and probably quite tricky to lift without damaging it. That’s all I can say from photos anyway…

If you’re in the neighborhood I wouldn’t say no to a hand @joeatkin2

It looks like the flooring I put down in my hallway. Solid oak wood planks but with a tongue and groove. I believe it’s called a floating floor - meaning that you put the planks down on a thin foam surface and leave a gap at the edge of the room allowing for expansion and contraction. You usually put the skirting boards over the top of the floor to hide the gap or put some kind of strip around the edge of the floor. The planks aren’t glued or nailed with this kind of arrangement.

I could be wrong but it is this kind of floor then you may need to remove one of the skirting boards in order to get the first board up and then work backwards.

@Glennbo that could be the case

Quite possibly. Looks like mine.

Yep, agree with Glen. That wide gap shows the tongue, which is not glued. In the same photo you can see where they’ve hacked off the bottom of the door frame to get the floor in under, then done a bit of a bodge job filling it back in. This was probably easier than trying to scribe round the frame in the first photo, where it looks like they only replaced the door stop.

Also, they did a bad job of masking off the floor when they repainted the frames (in an attempt to hide their sins).

I bet your doors are all slightly shorter than normal

Shorter than normal, would you accept don’t open properly and catch on the floor instead?

It looks like T&G flooring. Some types have the tongue and grooves machined so that they clip together. Some of them have clips that go underneath. Either way, they only go together one way starting from one side of the room and moving to the far side and to take them, you have to do it in reverse.
Basically, it’s a nightmare!
Good luck.

Make sure you want the cables laid bad enough that you are willing to potentially risk messing the whole floor.

If you break a few tongues then you’ll be on a wild goose chase looking for matching boards - maybe you have a few spare boards. in the loft or shed.

It also looks like they’ve take skirting boards off to tuck the boards under. So would require skirting board to be taken off as well.

I have decided to run the cables around the skirting board instead for this one. Thanks for all the advice everyone

Why don’t you take the skirtings off, bring them down to the space and we route several grooves into the backs to carry the various cables?
