The Mac Pro is ready, now what?

Hello makers.

Recently a 5,1 Mac Pro was donated to the space, I appointed myself with the task of making it an useful machine.

The Mac is a 6 core Xeon, 32gb or Ram, an ATI Radeon HD 5870 (2GB, with 6 video outputs!) And a 256GB sata SSD.

I’m donating the GPU, was in my private collection but this are dire times for GPU buyers.

Because none of GPU I own support Metal for Mac OS Mojave and we need a recent OS to run Fusion 360/Cura I decided to make Jobs roll in his grave and install windows 10.

And it’s absolutely flying.

It’s very stable and powerful, so much that I managed to play recent games at decent speed, SLMS favourite’s, Satisfactory, runs at 1080p 30 FPS on a medium/high quality setting buttery smooth, Fusion 360 it’s running without problems even with very complex geometries.

Now, it’s working, but what do we do with it ?

My idea is to set it up with a good screen and peripheral in the clean room and move the big iMac we have in Arc 2.

That’s because would be useful to have another machine in the second arc for people to Google things or even look at 3D design for the CNC without crossing the space, the imac is compact and self contained, the Mac Pro is big and honestly would be a shame to keep it for that task, this thing run circle around the iMac.

The other alternative is to set it up in the sofa area so we can use it for videogames and movies ?

I would like to hear more, I just don’t want it to be wasted in a time where computers are already hard to come by.

Also, as I donated time and resources, if this is going in private hands I will be taking back my parts, GPU and SSD.

Sounds like it’s a big improvement on what we have: nice work!

…previously we never had a satisfactory home for the iMac, but with Arch 2 we should be able to find one (it’s useful for members used to the Mac environment I imagine?)

@PReardon has some monitors reserved for us if we want them: 27 inch Dell monitors (p27 series), 1080p

Oh yeah a 27 Inc would be a perfect fit!

I have a colour sensor (it’s a proper one) I can use to calibrate the LCD so it people wants to do some Photoshop work they can as well.

Well done  Setup a render farm or miner. The space can make money out of that. Run it for sometime to have some numbers and see the viability of such farms/miners.

On the other hand that is great for 3D modelling, animation, slicing and CAM, video editing and of course rendering!

I spent the last 2 years hoarding second hands parts to help friends that can’t afford to buy computers, the price hikes it’s mostly fault of mining operations, you know how much I want to be part of that despicable practice?

None.

And I hope no one would do it at the space as is not environmental friendly and at this point borderline unethical in my option.

This computer will be a spend the rest of his life for Fun and Making and I hope the rest of the Space agrees with me…

Yeah agree, thats why I suggested a trial first. Also to have some data how it performed.

Definitely it’s something I’ll use for rendering or graphic intense apps.

I think this is the best plan, as we have more space and more members having a PC to use in each Arch will be nice!

Great work by the way!

The space can make money out of that.

In addition to being unethical, mining has been uneconomical for some time, my understanding is that you need to co-locate the mine INSIDE a coal factory to make it profitable.

Congratulations and thank you for your hard work! It seemed like a big can of worms when we spoke about it!

Hold one for the electronic benches if you can.

No worries, theres tons!

the flaw in your plan is that it is now completely, totally and in all other ways impossible to know what the login and password are for the cnc

Haha- its on the tool page! The label was just meant to stop people from stealing the screen (which happened once)

I am pretty sure that border has been thoroughly crossed.
